Design for Nonprofits
GOOD has an interesting article on design and branding as it relates to nonprofit organizations. Go here to read it. The article references a video by The Girl Effect, which uses type, movement and music to communicate an important message – “The powerful social and economic change brought about when girls have the opportunity to participate in their society.” You can check it out on their website here. (Answer the question on the splash screen and you’ll see the video.)
FREE Admission to Fort Worth’s Museums
Here’s a great opportunity to see some great art (at some great museums) and earn Art & Design credits. Free admission this Saturday, Sept. 26 only. You can go to Day in the District website here.
The Substance of Style
Virginia Postrel in The Substance of Style lays out a great argument for why surface is substance. She presents fascinating research and history on everything from Starbucks to the iMac. Why would someone pay an extra $100 more for a black Mac laptop rather than white? Aesthetics seem to matter more now than ever. When I go to Lowe’s to by a new ceiling fan I have a dizzying amount of affordable choices. How did we get here?
If you are interested in how your degree fits into today’s broader economy this is a great book. And if nothing else, it could actually give your parents some assurance that a degree in art might make financial sense after all.

American Marketing Association Volunteer Opportunity
Graphic Design and artists are needed for ACU’s American Marketing Association. Students would be provided the opportunity to expand their portfolio in real world settings and scenarios. The group looks great on a resume and is a fun way to get involved on and off campus. Contact Zach Cook at 214.724.7259 or at zcc05a@acu.edu.
