The question of the object… and representation: Chema Madoz

After looking at the landscapes of Joel Sternfeld, portraits by Leibovitz, and narrative by Crewdson, we swiftly transition to the question of the object and its representation, a discourse on photography and image, sign and signified. The Spanish photographer Chema Madoz is in my opinion, a genius at work playing with the relations between photo-surrealist representations and language.

Photographer of the week 09: Crewdson

Greg Crewdson

On Main Street, Pittsfield Massachusetts lights are being rigged, props are being positioned and actors are taking their places. It looks like a movie, sounds like a movie and smells like a movie, but it isn’t. All of this activity is to make a single photograph, by Gregory Crewdson.

“I work with a production crew that all come out of film. We work with cinematic lighting but we are only after creating one single perfect moment.” (Gregory Crewdson, photographer)

Over an 11-day shoot in a variety of locations Crewdson’s team will make a series of multiple exposures which will be digitally combined to make six final images. He’ll produce an edition of six prints of each image priced at approximately $60,000. There’s already a list of prospective buyers.

With his striking tableaux which combine Hollywood’s production values with suburbia’s bad dreams Crewdson has become hot property, confident that he has an audience who will appreciate, and if they can afford it, buy his work. For Crewdson the business and benefits of being a photographer feel very different from the experience of earlier generations.

Well, here’s a “copy & paste” from Intro to Photography’s Photographer of the week in case you missed. :)

Annie Leibovitz
One of my favorite photographers of all, for her versatile, daring and crafty style. I was able to see her exhibition: A Photographer’s Life, and many of her original prints in Paris last year.

Morten Nilsson

“I find the ballroom dancers interesting because of their clothes, makeup, and in many ways their still imperfect and immature body and mind that the teenage dancer represents – put in a world searching for perfection. It is a world where the right size and measures, the right positions, grown up demands and conservatism rules. It is about basic training in being a perfect adult-a perfect gentleman or a real lady princess.” by Nilsson

Yeondoo Jung

While many photographers exploit their models in using them as props, Yeondoo Jung is generous with his talent. The Korean-born photographer lends himself and his camera to “average” people, allowing them to realize wondrous, stifled and personal fantasies.

John Paul Caponigro

In light of our next project, I thought it would be quite interesting to display (and discuss) Caponigro’s mirrored images. His use of simple elements such as clouds and water surfaces seem surreal, yet, achieving such intriguing and engaging images. Caponigro is one of the most creative visual artists working today. Dedicated to fostering the growth of creativity in others, he exhibits, writes, lectures, and teaches seminars and digital photography workshops. His life’s work is a call to connect with our natural world, with each other, and with ourselves.

From his ‘Gallery’ page, make sure to look at “EXHALATION” series… after looking at the other ones. :) They will be displayed as PDF.

Photographer of the week 03: Sternfeld

Joel Sternfeld is well known for large-format color photographs that extend the tradition of chronicling roadside America initiated by Walker Evans in the 1930s. Sternfeld’s projects have consistently explored the possibility of a collective American identity by documenting ordinary people and places throughout the country. Each project he embarks on is bound by a concept that imbues it with subtle irony, often through insightful visual juxtapositions or by pairing images with informational text. Another characteristic aspect of Sternfeld’s work is that color is never arbitrary; it functions in highly sophisticated ways to connect elements and resonate emotion.

A Small World: by Olivo Barbieri (Italian artist and photographer)

There’s no better photographer to kick-off our series “photographer of the week” than Olivo Barbieri. His work surfaces a classic discussion about depiction of the real. Site Specific is a play in our senses and perception. They look uncannily like hyperdetailed models, absent the imperfections of reality.
