Now we start looking at more contemporary photographers. Dan Winters is one of my favorite commercial/editorial photographers. I had a chance to meet him while attending a workshop in Hunt, TX a few years ago. Really a great guy, and an excellent eye for “light composition.” He is now based in Austin.

The softness in this photo is really nice. I like that there is no hard light and short depth of field. The little detail of the leaf makes the photo interesting. Her 3/4 or almost profile view is interesting as well as her closed eyes. Because of these things, I enjoy the composition of the photo being centered and straight on.It’s a very nice photo!

I really enjoy Dan Winters style of photography, he seems to have created his own brand. I liked his “places and things” photos the best. They seemed to be reminiscent of Bernd and Hilla Becher, with heavy use of symmetrical industrial images. I find it fascinating that something that was created purely for scientific reasons can also be so aesthetically pleasing.
