Howard

Age: 50
Occupation: Real Estate Agent

Howard loves to have a good time and enjoys being the life of the party. He has recently turned 50, and with his new age, comes new health problems. He has to take a multitude of medications for his arthritis and joint pains. Howard has a fast paced busy life that begins early in the morning and goes until late into the evening. Taking medication at certain times of the day can get tricky and he sometimes forgets. He needs a way to remember all of this new information and to alert him when he needs to take it so that he doesn’t forget with his busy schedule. He found this app on his iphone that lets him enter all the information and guidelines of his medications, and set alerts throughout the day to remind him to take his medication so that he wont have pain. He loves that he can order new medication right from his phone so he doesn’t have to wait in line at the pharmacy, since he does not have much time.

Jessica

Age: 27
Occupation: Secretary

Jessica has diabetes and wears a medical bracelet since it is so severe, and sometimes her blood sugar levels get too low. She needs a way to remind herself when to take her medications, and also a log of all her medications with specific notes and images so that if anything were to happen, like passing out from low blood sugar, the information would be stored in her app on her iphone. This could be extremely useful to someone trying to help Jessica in a crisis situation. Her app would list exactly the name, dosage, doctor and pharmacist who prescribed and filled the prescription, and any other necessary information such as if she needs to take water or food with her medication.

Interview summary

I interviewed people through an anonymous survey, because of the nature of my questions, some people would feel uncomfortable telling me about their medical problems. I need to do some more research about the demographics to narrow down who will specifically be using this app, but my initial interviews gave me some great feedback about general usage.

Most people have daily medications that they take, and with many of them it is at the same specific time every day. There is a wide range of medications so adding lost of medication choices, and entering your own medication with dosage amount and an image would be helpful. Then you would set up the specifications of what time of the day or take with or without food.

Many people have scheduling problems, so an alarm push notification with a snooze would be useful. Online ordering would be another great tool that the app would do.

Interview Questions

1.Do you take medications on a daily basis?

2.If so, how many medications do you take, and what kinds?

3.What parameters do your medications have? (such as dosage amount, taken multiple times a day, with/without water, with/without food, or specific times of the day)

4. Have you ever had trouble remembering to take a medication?

5.How often do you forget to take a medication on a daily basis?

6.Have you ever have trouble identifying a medication? Please explain what happened.

7.Have you ever mixed up a medication, taken at the wrong time, or taken with another medication that was not supposed to be mixed? Did this result from trouble identifying the medication? Please explain what happened.

8.How do you currently handle your pill/medication schedule? Does this interrupt your daily life? Please explain.

9.Would you benefit from or use an application for a mobile device (iphone, android) that allows you to organize your pill schedule? What features might be useful? (alarm, images of pill, amount, etc.) Please explain.

10.Would the ability to re-order a prescription from your pharmacy from your phone be useful and beneficial? What pharmacy do you use? Please explain.

5 Ideas for Iphone App

1. Pill/Medicine reminder app. This app would allow you to enter all of the information about your prescription and even upload an image of the pill with your dosage amounts, and set the days and times of the week that you need to take this medicine. It would then sent you notifications, with a snooze or delay button so that it keeps reminding you until you take it. It would also have a feature where you can re-order your prescription from your local pharmacy.

2.A nutrition calorie counter app. One of the main problems with these kind of apps for me is the lack of nutritional information available for restaurants, especially local. I like to record everything I eat and exercise, but going to a local restaurant where there is not any nutrition information makes it difficult. I want this to be a large database, where you can even add restaurants easily with their nutrition information (say you ask the owner for this information), and also a log to keep track. Images of the meals could also be an option so you can remember and add the info later.

3.Design blog/community networking or finder. It is always a challenge to find new GOOD designers and their blogs unless you get their from someone else. I would like a database for finding this, and even a networking opportunity for finding jobs. similar to dribbble, but it would be more of a social networking app that then links you to their portfolio/blog.

4.My favorite food app. I always have a go to favorite at restaurants, but sometimes at a new place, I get something and love it. But then when you go back you cant remember what you got last time. This allows you to take a picture of what you ate, enter the name, and then even post it so your friends can see. It would be like advertising for the restaurant, but also its just a type of feed saying good foods, and it allows you to remember what you get.

5. An in depth travel app. One that includes all of the tasks that many different websites offer. It is so frustrating trying to plan a trip, and trying to find the cheapest best deal, but you have to search 10 different pages for packages and different travel websites. This app would compile all of your choices with an extensive search options, in order to narrow or widen your choices. This would allow you to search for an area, or for all-inclusive or package deals, with dates of travel and location.

Reflection

The blog was a challenge because the pages are all so similar, but different. They have to have the same feel and layout in order to make sense, but the levels of hierarchy on each page changed. This project had a lot of type arrangement and that was difficult sometimes to figure out the hierarchy and to make it the correct size and readable, although I think this time it was much easier to find a solution than on previous assignments. I think one area that coule be worked on more for me would be the hierarchy in the post title and date. The fonts I chose limited my choices, such as the thing I wanted to be higher did not have any bold or italic. Looking at it now I think the date could be even smaller than I made it so that the title would stand out more, and even maybe change the order. One page that I think is very readable and useable is the single post page with the comments at the bottom. I struggled to make the comments stand out from the submission boxes, and also so that it was not so heavy of a color that it brought your eye down to it immediately. I looked at a lot of other popular blogs and used a similar layout and I believe it reads well, with the exception of a little bit of spacing issue with the posters name and the date. I feel as if the home page is clear and it would be easy to see what interests me and to click on a post and go on to the post page. The clipped image is not too big but not too small, to where you can see a preview and it draws you in, which I think is the purpose of the blog. The archive page was difficult, and I think if I could do it differently I would make it slightly different from the other two pages, maybe with month and year and then it would continue onto posts from that month or year. This page was for categories (or tags) and I think it clearly tells you what has been placed in that category. I enjoyed this project and I would really like to make this blog real and connect it to my portfolio sometime in the future.
