Join us for the LS Ribbon Cutting

We’re looking forward to an astonishing week with over 500 attendees as ACU’s second Connected Summit conference on mobile learning. The conference will host discussions on mobility and media, the future of the book, and projects introducing iOS devices across K-12 and Higher Education–a truly astonishing group of speakers joining us in Abilene.

If you’re in Abilene, please join us for the ribbon-cutting ceremonies Monday afternoon at 2:15. We’ll welcome members of the AT&T team, colleagues from other universities and school districts, as well as community guests.

If you can’t make it, I’m including a nice overview of the Learning Studio put together for the event. We’ll offer follow-up tours of the facility throughout the day on Tuesday as well. We hope you’ll join us.

Vimeo Video School

For those looking for help on shooting and editing their first video, Vimeo has put together a series of shorts introducing basic concepts, including selecting gear, shooting, editing, sound, and software.

  • Vimeo Video School
    • Video 101 – the basics for beginners
    • DSLR Basics – shooting HD video with digital SLR cameras

Whether you’re getting ready for a class video project or shooting your first FilmFest film, Vimeo offers an excellent resource.

Drywall and Lighting are in

For those keeping an eye on progress in the Learning Studio, one more set of pics to show how far construction has come. Over the next two weeks they’ll paint and carpet upstairs with a few more to install technology in the media lab and collaboration rooms.

Grand opening will be here before we know it the last week in February. We’ll hope to see you there.

DSLR Explosion

The last year has seen an explosion of indie filmmaking on new hybrid cameras that bring HD (1080p) video to the digital SLR still camera. DSLRs have significantly larger image sensors than most pro-sumer video cameras and already work with a wide-range of lenses that bring the cinematic quality of shallow depth of field and low-light shooting to a growing number of HDSLR professional and aspiring filmmakers.

Vincent Laforet is photographer and commercial director out of LA who has produced some exciting work on Canon’s 7D and 5DmkII. Nocturne and Reverie were two early films that set off much of this early excitement.

A clear example of how much this community has grown in the last year is The Story Beyond the Still contest, hosted by Canon and Vimeo. Laforet was commissioned to shoot the first short film (2-4 minutes) entirely on HDSLR cameras telling the first chapter in a story that would then be continued over several months by other filmmakers. The Cabbie was Laforet’s prologue. The contest page below links to the winners and finalists of each of the following weeks.

For more information, here are a couple pages on getting into HDSLR filmmaking.

Construction continues upstairs

Thanks to Donald Simpson and the Friends of the ACU Library for continuing to capture progress on the Learning Studio and Speaking Center construction upstairs. If you’re a student studying for finals, you’ve already heard the sounds of construction echoing through the library. Not long now. . .
