Miss Frontier Texas campaign

Congrats to the staff at Morris & Mitchell, ACU’s student-run Ad/PR agency, for kicking off the upcoming Miss Frontier Texas campaign. Young women from around Abilene will compete for $3,000 in scholarships in an original blend of “frontier” pageant categories.

Their launch video does a great job of introducing the event.

The Morris & Mitchell staff were an invaluable part of our inaugural semesters last spring, proposing a range of events to help welcome students into the Learning Studio including the Red Carpet Premiere in February.

Thanks to Joyce Haley and her students from Morris & Mitchell for their energy and insight.

24FPS next weekend

For fans of FilmFest, the Paramount will be hosting their annual short film festival next weekend, with programs Friday night (4th) and Saturday afternoon and evening (5th).

24FPS is an international film festival that brings important work in animation, documentary, and narrative film to Abilene. Watching a short film (20 minutes or less) is a lot like reading a short story, requiring the same economy and focus in storytelling.

Here are a few trailers in a range of styles to give you a glimpse of  what you’ll see at the Paramount next weekend.  (more…)

Rachel Held Evans and Dr. Beck

Thanks to the Honors College for bringing Christian author and blogger Rachel Held Evans to campus as part of Summit this year. Rachel is the author of Evolving in Monkey Town and is currently working on A Year of Biblical Womanhood. (See Mike Cope’s blog for a nice review of Monkey Town.)

After her main Summit presentation, Rachel joined psychology prof and blogger Richard Beck for an energetic discussion of blogging in the current religious, political, and social climate.

What was the evolution of your blog?

How can a blog create more civil public discourse?

How do you decide between competing ideas?

Featured in ACU Today profile

This last week the Learning Studio appeared in the summer issue of the alumni magazine, ACU Today. The article walks through some of the assumptions behind the design of the facility and the changing face of the 21st-century library:

“Education is no longer about preparing our students to contribute to conversations after they graduate; the vital discussions of our day are already underway and our students are producing messages for a global audience in a wide range of media.”  – Kyle Dickson

In the article I reference a couple scenes from the brand new Brown Library in 1970, including ACU’s first state-of-the-art media center with 50 audio cassette players. Here are those photos.

Digital Academy in Gruene

The weekend of Fall Break, Nil Santana will help faculty at any any level get the most out of their camera. The workshop will include sessions on shooting portraits, architecture, and landscapes, with breaks where participants learn to read a photograph.

Lightpainting at Fort Griffin

In September we’re inviting Digital Academy alumni and interested faculty and staff to join us at Fort Griffin for our first lightpainting outing. All participants will need a tripod and SLR camera (*a limited number of each available for checkout from the Learning Studio). Event begins with dinner at the Beehive in Albany at 7:00pm.
