Bill Frakes on campus Oct. 1

We’re delighted to announce that next week Sports Illustrated photographer Bill Frakes will be on campus. Bill has covered major sporting events around the world in a career that has spanned profound transitions in journalism and his own work first as a photographer and now also as a filmmaker.

Bill recently served as a chair for the World Press Photo contest for sports photography in 2013 that made final selections from over 100,000 entries. Whether you join us for an evening on the power of storytelling or a less formal setting, we’re confident you’ll leave seeing images on screen and in print in a totally different way.

Many years ago, a young American mother named Agnes Frakespointed out images all around her tiny Nebraska town to her four-year-old son Bill: a cat’s shadow, a pool of oil beneath a car, his own name etched in a cookie tray of caramel popcorn. The boy looked at the objects and saw nothing. ‘Look again,’ she said. ‘There is always more there than what your eye sees…’ Twenty-five years later the boy became one of the most accomplished sports photographers in the world.

Studio Lighting workshop

Nil Santana’s Advanced Photography class joined us in the Learning Studio last month for a couple days looking at studio lighting. Thanks to Kyle Trafton, one of our media production specialists, who helped Nil’s students to get the most out of a variety of lighting solutions.

Here are a few of the portraits Nil’s students produced in the studio as well as a few of their final submissions. For a glance at Nil’s complete assignment, see the links below.

Project Brief

You’ve been asked to produce a “cover story” in the style of a popular consumer magazine that you like. You will submit a copy of the magazine along with your assignment for comparison. In this assignment, you will produce one “cover” portrait photo, and in addition, you will produce two more “inside” story shots, either black-and-white or color, one of which will be a performance shot (environmental), and the other a more relaxed “everyday person” portrait that lets us see something of the person behind the performance role. . .

The nature of consumer editorial portraiture centers on celebrities, or at least people of particular notability. There is frequently an emphasis on performers of one sort or another, be it show biz or politics or science. The performance aspect may be overt or implied, but it is usually there. You will do well to seek out as a subject someone who either is a performer, or has aspirations to be in the public eye. Try to discover the specific nature of this desire and draw upon it for your work. (more…)

Lightpainting at Fort Griffin

This September we took a group of advanced photographers–and aspiring advanced photographers–out to Albany, Texas, to shoot the big sky. Nil Santana from the department of Art & Design worked to help participants get the most out of their cameras and find an original point of view.

Thanks so much to Tecia Santana and to Sandra and Ben from the Learning Studio for their expert painting. The pictures everyone submitted really give you a sense of how clear a night in West Texas can be. Amazing night. Thanks so much to everyone who came along.

Faculty Photography events this fall

This semester faculty are invited to join us at one of two events that aim to build confidence in digital photography. Space will be limited, so please RSVP using one of the forms below.

Digital Academy in Gruene

The weekend of Fall Break, Nil Santana will help faculty at any any level get the most out of their camera. The workshop will include sessions on shooting portraits, architecture, and landscapes, with breaks where participants learn to read a photograph.

Lightpainting at Fort Griffin

In September we’re inviting Digital Academy alumni and interested faculty and staff to join us at Fort Griffin for our first lightpainting outing. All participants will need a tripod and SLR camera (*a limited number of each available for checkout from the Learning Studio). Event begins with dinner at the Beehive in Albany at 7:00pm.
